A practice built around tools that fit, not tools that impress
Serambi Studio is a small team in Johor Bahru. We work with businesses that have a specific paperwork or process problem, and we find out whether any AI tooling can quietly help with it.
Back to HomeWho We Are
Started from a specific frustration
Serambi Studio began in 2022, not as an AI company, but as a response to a recurring conversation. A small distributor in Johor Bahru was spending two full days each month on invoice reconciliation that should have taken four hours. A tailor shop nearby had a backlog of delivery orders it couldn't process fast enough to keep its spreadsheet current.
The problem wasn't effort. The businesses were working hard. The problem was that routine, repetitive document tasks were eating time that could have gone elsewhere. Off-the-shelf software either required a full platform change or was aimed at companies much larger than these.
We started offering to set up targeted reading and matching steps — small, specific, fitted to what was already there. The name Serambi, meaning "verandah" in Malay, came from that idea: a sheltered space between the busy outside and the organised inside, where things can be sorted before they come in.
Today we offer three services, all with a flat rate and a defined scope. We don't sell subscriptions, and we don't offer ongoing management unless a client specifically asks for it. Once a setup is done, it belongs to the business that paid for it.
Most of our clients are SMEs in Johor and southern Peninsular Malaysia. Some have accounting staff; some are owner-operators doing everything themselves. The coaching service is particularly popular with businesses where the owner wants to understand what the tool is doing before handing it off.
We stay small on purpose. It means we can be direct about what a tool can and can't do — rather than overpromising to close a deal.
What We Stand For
Three things we won't compromise on
Transparency about limits
Every engagement ends with a written note on what the tool handles poorly. We don't hide this. A client who knows the boundaries can manage the tool; one who doesn't will be surprised at the worst moment.
People stay in the loop
None of our setups write to your accounts or file documents without a person confirming first. Suggestions with confidence notes, yes. Autonomous action, no. The decision always belongs to your team.
Scope stays fixed
We scope each engagement in writing before starting. The price doesn't change mid-project. If something falls outside scope, we say so and discuss it separately — not quietly add it to the bill.
The Team
The people you'll work with
Ahmad Marzuki
Founder & Setup Lead
Ahmad handles all document reading and reconciliation setups. He spent eight years in finance operations before founding Serambi Studio, which is why he's particular about scope documents.
Nadia Rashid
Coaching & Client Support
Nadia runs the staff coaching sessions. She has a background in adult learning and insists that every session use real tasks from that week rather than exercises — it's her rule, not ours.
Lim Kai Wen
Technical Integration
Kai Wen handles the technical connections — linking setups to existing accounting packages, building the fallback paths, and writing the limitation notes that go out at the end of every engagement.
How We Work
Standards we apply to every engagement
Written scope before start
Every engagement begins with a written scope document — what's included, what's not, and what the deliverable looks like. No work starts without sign-off.
Your data stays yours
We don't retain your documents or accounting data after a setup is complete. All data handling is governed by Malaysia's PDPA. We can provide details on request.
Tuning until it's acceptable
For document reading setups, we tune on a sample of 100 of your actual documents and keep adjusting until the error rate is one you find workable — not one we find acceptable.
Fallback paths built in
Every integration we build includes a fallback — what happens if the connection drops, if the tool reads something incorrectly, or if the accounting software is temporarily unavailable.
Limitation notes in writing
At the end of each setup engagement, you receive a written note documenting which document types or transaction patterns the tool handles poorly, so your team knows where to apply extra care.
Session recordings provided
Coaching sessions are recorded and provided with written notes after each one. New staff members who join later can go through the same material without needing to book additional sessions.
Context
AI integration for small businesses in Malaysia
Small businesses in Malaysia face a specific tension around AI tooling. The tools themselves have become genuinely useful for document-heavy tasks — reading invoices, matching bank lines, drafting routine replies. But most of the tooling on the market is designed for larger organisations, with procurement processes, IT departments, and training budgets that most SMEs in Johor Bahru simply don't have.
Serambi Studio works in that gap. We don't offer a platform or a subscription. We set up a specific piece of tooling, connect it to what you already use, and hand it over with a walkthrough and a written note on its limits. The flat-rate model reflects the fact that most businesses we work with have a defined problem, not an open-ended need for ongoing support.
The businesses we work with best tend to be those where someone — an owner, an accounts manager, a senior admin — has a clear sense of which task is taking too long. That clarity makes the scope conversation straightforward. Where there's no clear starting point, we usually suggest starting with a conversation rather than a service.
Work With Us
A short conversation first, always
Before any engagement, we talk through your situation to work out whether any of our services make sense for you. There's no charge for that conversation.
